Hong Kong took on Iraq in Sheikh Ali Bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Stadium, Bahrain on Friday evening for another crunching battle in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Preliminary Joint Qualification Round 2 Group C. Hong Kong was under pressure for the most part of the game and eventually succumbed to Iraq by 0:1.

Iraq quickly seized control of the game after the opening whistle. On the 6th minute, Ali Adnan Al-Tameemi unloaded a ferocious shot from the left side of the Hong Kong box but drilled the ball wide.

Afterwards, Iraq continued to enjoy better ball-possession, as Bashar Resan Bonyan and Ali Adnan Al-Tameemi both tried their luck with shots towards the Hong Kong net but somehow came up empty handed.

However, Iraq was not to be denied and went ahead on the 11th minute. Mohammed Qasim Majid had control of the ball down the right wing and whipped a bouncing left-footer towards the Hong Kong penalty area. Fung Hing-wah tried to clear the ball away but accidentally nodded it into the Hong Kong net, putting Iraq in front with an early lead.

It was still Iraq on the 21st minute, as Bashar Resan Bonyan picked up the ball on the right side, found enough daylight and pulled the trigger, only to smash the ball wide.

Past the half hour mark, Iraq went knocking on the Hong Kong door once again. Mohammed Qasim Majid cut inside from the right wing and let rip a rocket shot that sailed wide off the Hong Kong net.

Moments later, Mohanad Ali Kadhim picked up the ball through a teammate’s forward pass and unleashed a cracking shot that missed finding the intended target. The first half eventually ended with Hong Kong trailing Iraq 0:1.

Iraq continued to enjoy the upper hand in the second half. On the 53rd minute, Ali Adnan Al-Tameemi belted a powerful, curling free-kick from the right wing but saw his effort punched away by Hong Kong goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai.

Iraq almost added to its lead on the 59th minute, as Ahmed Ibrahim Khalaf connected with a teammate’s corner-kick delivery but directed his leaping header just wide off the Hong Kong goal.

The West Asian side continued to press for the next goal and came close. On the 64th minute, Bashar Resan Bonyan delivered a dangerous free-kick into the Hong Kong penalty area. Mohanad Ali Kadhim dished out a soaring header but sent the ball wide.

Hong Kong generated a rare shooting attempt on the 72nd minute, as substitute Sun Ming-him pushed forward with the ball and drilled a long range shot towards goal but failed to hit the target.

Iraq had a decent scoring chance on the 82nd minute, as Ibrahim Bayesh found himself on the receiving end of a teammate’s cross, then dished out a flying header that was easily claimed by Yapp Hung-fai in the Hong Kong net.

The score remained unchanged towards the final whistle, as Hong Kong dropped a 0:1 decision to Iraq in the latest FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Preliminary Joint Qualification Round 2 Group C fixture.
